Find out what Aurora York Central PROBUS has been up to.

As we look forward to April’s fresh energy and opportunities, here’s a short poem,
written by Sylvia Wolff to celebrate the spirit of our Aurora York Central PROBUS community.
Executive members Garry Sleep, Sylvia Wolff, David Brisley and Tim Hill attended the District 2 Workshop at the Newmarket Legion.
The workshops arranged by PROBUS Canada for and attended by executive members of PROBUS clubs in district 2. It is an opportunity for the exchange of ideas about how the various executive members manage their club responsibilities.
The keynote speaker delivered an informative look into the Probus Canada website and the many services PROBUS Canada provides for PROBUS clubs.
Each of us sat at a table with other club executive members of the same roles and shared our experiences. We all came away with some very helpful information.
Owners Rob Velenik and Marcia Delleport set one long table for the twenty-one of us that met at Sweet Duchess for lunch and did a stellar job of looking after us. Our meals were delicious and the wait staff were terrific.
We enjoyed lively conversation, plenty of laughter with friends and left with full tummies and happy spirits. Please join us for next month’s Dining Out. It will be dinner, 6 pm at Cynthia’s in Newmarket.
President Garry Sleep welcomes new member Alan Craig to the club and presents his official name badge.
Co-presenter Richard Wisemann pulled this month’s winning 50/50 ticket. Marie Wallace presented the cash. Congratulations Rosalyn Gonsalves!
Our presentation was led by Dr. Frances Morton-Chang, the Program Manager for the Seniors Strategy at the Regional Municipality of York,
She explained the nature and the current status of the York Region Seniors Strategy. The specific project is formally known as the 2024 to 2027 York Region Plan to Support Seniors: Navigating Forward Together.
Richard Wizemann supported her. Richard holds various responsibilities within the Public Works department. He provided specific details on the transportation services that York Region provides for seniors, both free of charge and through GO Transit.
The York Region Plan to Support Seniors, focus on these aims and objectives:
Frances’ comprehensive explanation demonstrated how these goals are being achieved. She detailed the many services that are available from the Federal, Provincial and Municipal governments and in addition from agencies and nonprofit organizations. It is a very extensive list and there are many services that people are not aware of. Or, if they are, the full extent of any one resource may not be obvious, one example, paramedics. A major goal of the project is to better coordinate the services and publicize what is available.
In case you did not pick up literature provided; Dr. Morton-Chang has kindly provided with a link to a searchable brochure on these York Region services. Here is the link which you can copy and paste into a web browser to access:

There was a lot of detail in the presentation, too much to summarized here. Richard has sent us the presentation’s full slide deck in PDF format. Sylvia Wolf has since circulated it to all members..
Richard did elicit much interest in the senior’s door to door small vehicle transportation services in the questions asked during his talk and In the Q &A following. Details are found in the Transit Family of Services in the presentation slides.
